How to Record Swimming Workouts with Live Stats Overlay
Film pool or open-water swim sessions and display lap count, distance, heart rate, and stroke rate on your workout videos with FitCam's swimming overlay.
Swimming is one of the hardest sports to film well — and even harder to show data for. Your phone can't go in the water, your watch is on your wrist, and the key metrics (lap count, stroke rate, distance) aren't visible to any camera. FitCam's swimming overlay solves this by pulling Apple Watch swim data and displaying it on camera-side footage.
The setup for swimming video
For swimming, your iPhone stays poolside or on a tripod pointed at the pool. You wear your Apple Watch in the water — it's swim-proof and tracks your laps, stroke rate, SWOLF, and heart rate automatically. FitCam reads that data in real time and displays it on the camera feed.
What the swimming overlay displays
- Lap count (current lap / total laps)
- Distance covered (meters or yards)
- Heart rate (during and between laps)
- SWOLF score (stroke efficiency metric — lower is better)
- Stroke rate (strokes per minute)
- Elapsed time
SWOLF: the metric swimming content creators should show
SWOLF — strokes plus time per length — is the efficiency benchmark in swimming, equivalent to pace in running. Showing SWOLF on your video immediately signals that you understand swim training. For viewers who swim seriously, it's a credibility marker and a talking point.
Positioning your iPhone for pool footage
- Tripod at the end of the lane captures arrivals and turns — great for showing lap transitions with the lap counter ticking up
- Tripod at the side of the pool captures full strokes mid-lane — better for technique content
- Elevated angle (bleachers or balcony if available) captures multiple lanes and gives context for longer swim sets
Open water swimming
For open water swims, the iPhone stays on shore or with a support person. The Apple Watch tracks GPS distance, heart rate, and stroke data. After the swim, FitCam's Video Editor can sync the Watch data to any shore-side footage — showing distance completed, elapsed time, and heart rate as an after-the-fact overlay.
Film your swim sessions with live lap count, SWOLF, and heart rate on screen.
