How to Import GPX, FIT, and Apple Health Data into Workout Videos
A complete guide to importing workout data from GPX files, Garmin FIT files, and Apple Health into FitCam's Video Editor to add live stats overlays to any existing footage.
Not every workout is filmed live. Sometimes you're racing and the camera is fixed. Sometimes you're on a GoPro with no phone handy. Sometimes you just want to add data to old footage. FitCam's Video Editor supports all of these scenarios — it can import workout data from GPX files, Garmin FIT files, and Apple Health, and sync them to any video you already have.
The three import sources
GPX files
GPX (GPS Exchange Format) is the universal standard for GPS route data. Strava, Wahoo, Komoot, Garmin Connect, and virtually every cycling and running app can export GPX. A GPX file contains timestamped GPS coordinates plus speed and sometimes elevation. Once imported into FitCam's Video Editor, these become the speed, distance, and position data for your overlay.
Garmin FIT files
FIT files are Garmin's native workout format and contain richer data than GPX — GPS, heart rate (if you wore a heart rate monitor), cadence, power, elevation, and more. If you train with a Garmin device, you already have these files for every workout. Import them into FitCam to add that recorded data to your video overlay.
Apple Health workouts
If you did the workout wearing an Apple Watch, everything is already saved in your Apple Health app — heart rate, distance, calories, pace, and more. FitCam can pull it directly, no file export needed. Just pick the workout from the date picker in the Video Editor and the data loads automatically.
The import and sync workflow
- Open FitCam and tap into the Video Editor.
- Import your video from the Camera Roll, Files app, or AirDrop from your action camera.
- Choose your data source: GPX file, FIT file, or Apple Health workout.
- FitCam displays both tracks on the timeline. Drag the data track to align the workout start with the first frame of footage.
- Preview the overlay updating as you scrub — confirm the sync is accurate.
- Choose your overlay style (cycling, running, map, etc.) and export.
Combining data sources
For the richest overlay, combine sources. Import GoPro cycling footage, add a GPX file for speed and GPS route, and layer in your Apple Watch heart rate data on top. The Video Editor merges these into a single synchronized timeline — every frame gets the right GPS speed from the GPX, the right heart rate from the Watch, and the right position for the map overlay.
Getting your files off Garmin or Strava
- Garmin Connect: Activity detail page → ⋯ menu → Export Original (downloads a .fit file)
- Strava: Activity page → ⋯ → Export GPX
- Wahoo ELEMNT: Ride History → Share → Export GPX
- Komoot: Tour detail → Download as GPX
- Transfer to iPhone via AirDrop, email, or save to Files app
Add live stats to your existing footage — import your GPX, FIT, or Apple Health data.
